Cosmetic Plastic Surgery: EAR TUCK

Studies have shown that psychologically children and teenagers can suffer tremendously from having large or irregular shaped ears. Along with all of the stresses of childhood and adolescence the problem of ears that stick out is one that can be addressed by way of surgery. Having ear correction surgery is a way to improve a child's level of self-esteem. Ear correction surgery is one of the most commonly undertaken of all of the cosmetic procedures.

The objective for the plastic surgeon in performing ear correction surgery is to create an even, symmetrical and proportional face that looks as natural as possible. A qualified plastic surgeon can perform ear correction surgery in such a way that there are next to no visible scars. Ear correction surgery helps to improve the shape, size and position of the ears. Some patients need refinement in all three areas while some only require it in one or two areas.

Protruding ears are not the only ear problems that can be corrected by an otoplasty. Some individuals suffer from "lop ear" which means that the tip of their ear folds down slightly and in a forward direction. This can be fixed by ear correction surgery as can "cupped ear" which means that the ear is unusually small. Another ear problem is that of "shell ear" and this is when there is a curve evident in the outer rim of the ear and also when the natural creases and folds of the ear that should be there are not.

Ear correction can do other things as well. It can improve the appearance of stretched earlobes or very large earlobes and it can also improve earlobes that have wrinkles or big creases in them. With all of the advances in modern medicine and plastic surgery, it is possible for plastic surgeons to build ears for individuals who were born without them and to build new ones for people who have lost them due to an accident or injury. Be aware that in some cases the scar that is left after the surgery might be worse than the initial problem. Always talk at length with the plastic surgeon about what to expect after your surgery is done. For some people the thought of a scar is the worst case scenario.

The majority of ear correction patients are pleased with the end result of their surgery. It is important however to always be realistic about what ear correction surgery can and cannot do for your looks. Ear correction surgery can improve the look of the ears but the surgery will not give you perfect ears. As well, while the surgeon can make your ears more symmetrical in relation to your entire face, perfect symmetry of the ears is unlikely to happen. No one has a perfectly symmetrical body but aiming to achieve as high a level of symmetry with the ears as possible is something that a plastic surgeon can make happen.
